The English Book Club December 2022: Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart

In autumn 2022, The English Book Club will read Louisa May Alcott’s classic Little Women (1869). The novel is lengthy, but the next book, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1961) by the Scottish writer Muriel Spark, is shorter. In October, we are introduced to the most recent Nobel laureate in literature, Abdulrazak Gurnah and his breakthrough novel Paradise (1994). In November, we move to Canada and examine Emily St. John Mandel’s narrative of a pandemic in Station Eleven (2014). We finish off the season with another Scottish novel, the acclaimed Shuggie Bain (2020) by Douglas Stuart. Welcome to another season of reading!
