The 1980’s in the UK: The riots in London and the beginning of the peace process in northern Ireland. How were these events connected and does this history still influence the situation in the UK in 2025?
How community involvement and action research, multi-agency operations and civil emergency planning during the civil disorders in Brixton and Tottenham in 1985, led to comparative research of the “Troubles” in Belfast, London/Derry and Crossmaglen in 1989. The development of “community policing”, multi-agency crime reduction and public protection policy, and “community involvement and participation strategies” in London during the 1990’s. The changing dynamics in northern Ireland which resulted in the “Good Friday Agreement” in April 1998.
Michael is a former National Probation Service (NPS) Public Protection Unit head and head of the Lambeth Police Committee Support Unit, Towards a Safer Brixton project manager, Safety Unit-Civil Emergency Planning Unit officer, researcher and policy advisor on community and policing issues.
