Finnbrit Gothic Book Club – September 2024
Thursday, 5 September 2024
18:00 – 19:00
In this book club, we will read a selection of Gothic tales ranging from Victorian classics to contemporary works. We explore timeless motifs of the Gothic genre, including ancient castles and the supernatural, but also romance and psychological themes. We meet once a month at Finnbrit and discuss together what we have read and what to read for the next meeting. Coffee and tea will be provided. Whether you’ve read the entire book or just a few chapters, you are welcome to join us for a light-hearted and engaging discussion!
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
For our first club meeting, we will discuss Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House (1959), a masterful 20th-century ghost story. The narrative follows an experiment at Hill House where occult scholar Dr. Montague invites three participants: Eleanor, a fragile young woman with a history of paranormal encounters; Theodora, a bohemian artist with psychic sensitivity; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. As the experiment progresses, the house’s eerie influence grows stronger, blurring the line between supernatural and psychological phenomena. The novel has been adapted into two films and a 2018 series produced for Netflix.
The book club is free for members and 10€ for others for the fall season.
