The YKI Test

The National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI) are language tests for adults provided by the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus). YKI test measures functional language proficiency in everyday situations at basic, intermediate, or advanced level.

YKI certificates are a way for you to prove your language skills to a Finnish employer or educational institution. YKI certificates are also used for Finnish citizenship applications. Finnbrit acts as a test centre for YKI tests in the Finnish and English languages. Please note that tests are booked via the website of the Finnish National Agency for Education. Please always check first with your employer, educational institution, immigration authorities, or other relevant parties, which test you should complete and what results you are expected to achieve.

However, you do not need an official reason to take a YKI test! Aiming for a language certificate can be an effective way to stay motivated in your language learning journey. YKI certificates do not expire, so holding a certificate can also prove to be beneficial later.

About the YKI-test

YKI tests are offered on three levels of proficiency: basic, intermediate, and advanced level. These proficiency levels correspond to the Common European Framework for Reference in Languages (CEFR). The basic level test corresponds to levels A1 and A2, the intermediate test corresponds to levels B1 and B2, and the advanced level test corresponds to levels C1 and C2. You can familiarise yourself with the CEFR levels on our website, and find out more about the different proficiency levels of YKI tests here.

YKI tests consist of four separate sub-tests: speaking, listening comprehension, writing, and reading comprehension. You can familiarise yourself with the structure of a YKI test on the Finnish National Agency for Education’s website. On the websites of the University of Jyväskylä, you can also read further descriptions of the different sub-tests (in Finnish) and familiarize yourself with the different question types. You will receive a separate grade for each sub-test.
