Victorian Women Writers

This evening, we will look into the work and life of a number of female novelists in 19th-century England. What made women writers enter the English literary tradition so prominently during the Victorian era? Why was the novel such a productive genre for women writers? How did these writers influence the generations of future (women) writers?

Dr Maria Salenius is Senior University Lecturer in British Literature at the University of Helsinki. Her special interests are the English Renaissance, the Victorian Novel, and the history of the British royal family.
